DUBLIN, Ireland–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c85233) has announced the addition of Enterprise VoIP Market Trends, 2008-2011 to their offering.

This report focuses on the North American market for VoIP among organizations in the mid-sized (100-1,000 email users) and enterprise markets (+1,000 email users). We have chosen to define organizational size based on the number of email users and not employees, since the former tends to be a more important determinant of technology choices for most organizations. It focuses on a major primary research survey of messaging decision-makers in North American organizations. (more…)

VOIP Phone Services Putting Our Seniors at Risk - Medical Alert Industry Leader VRI Develops an Innovative Solution

Traditional medical alert units are not reliable when used with VOIP or digital phone services - VRI engineers have developed proprietary software and hardware changes to provide a reliable solution

DAYTON, Ohio–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Traditional medical alert units, often worn by seniors around their neck or wrist to call for help in case of a fall or other adverse event, were designed to communicate by way of POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). After placing a telephone call, the emergency unit sends information from the home to the monitoring center to determine which emergency unit is calling and what type of help is needed. When consumers switch to digital phone service, the data can be distorted or omitted as the bandwidth of the internet service provider fluctuates (see http://www.monitoringcare.com/voip/ for an example), resulting in missed or inaccurate emergency reporting at the monitoring center. Skype Outage What Happened

I use skype basically everyday as I have many relatives living on at least three continents. The other reason is I live in a country where the cost of making an overseas call is quite high and the local telcos are doing their best to keep it that way.

On Thursday the 16th of August, I tried to place a call using Skype and guess what there was no connection. Well on that day I just did not make any voip call or any other kind of overseas call.

Lets see what Skypes offical reaction is:

On Thursday, 16th August 2007, the Skype peer-to-peer network became unstable and suffered a critical disruption. The disruption was triggered by a massive restart of our users’ computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine set of patches through Windows Update

You can read the rest on the official Skype Blog.

Will this happen again probably. But hey, all telephone companies have some down. In general though, I am usualy satisfied with the quality of service.

  • Pamela Call Recorder:

Lets you record your Skype calls.

  • Skypespace:

    Torrent style sharing program.

All toghether there are now 20 Skype Extras and many more on the way. Using the Skype Extras
Manager you can easily plug in the extras of your choice.

The user interface has also been redesigned and now allows more personalization.

Another interesting new feature is “Click-to-call” which allows web surfers to make callsto
ordinary with just one click using SkypeOut. It works with both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

These additions to Skype will make it a sticky application.
